Formed in the summer of 2015, Species Unknown blends the sounds of upbeat punk rock, indie guitar chords, and sad boy lyrics into a sound all on its own which they call Hipster Punk. Originally intended to be a street punk band by Matthew Escobar, Species Unknown began as Nowhere Fast and cycled through several starting members until finally ending as a three-piece with Robert Moreira on guitar and Simon Beck on drums. With Robert’s vast music theory knowledge and use of intricate chords, Matthew knew there was no chance this could be a simple street punk band anymore. Still, however, Matthew and Simon’s thrashy on-stage antics give them that raw punk appeal, and together with Robert’s guitar skill they come to form Species Unknown.
In the past two years of being a band, Species Unknown has released a self-titled album that is available on Bandcamp, Spotify, and iTunes, and is currently in the workings of recording a second album. They also have been on two tours: One across the South of the U.S. with No Advisory over the summer of 2016, and a second one with The Rays up the West Coast in the Spring of 2017.
