Mikey Mike Performs at Rock City Studios
Local bands Third Wheels and Pretty Well opened for LA’s own Mikey Mike and his band this past Friday night (5/19/17). For just $5, music fans could see Mikey Mike’s performance before he goes live on Jimmy Kimmel. Upon entering the building, audience members had the option of sitting at a table to their left, or standing in the open space in front of the stage.
The opener, Third Wheels, was a four-man “punk funk” band who rocked several original songs like “I Can’t Think” and “Crusty Sheets” as well as a cover of Nirvana’s “Territorial Pissings.” Their grungy-punk sound got the audience up on their feet and got energy levels up for the start of the show.
Following Third Wheels was Pretty Well, a one-man group consisting of Zach Valladon, an ex-member of the band Daily Drive (who are performing a reunion show on the 25th). Armed with an acoustic guitar, Pretty Well performed a soft and soulful indie set, with a sing-a-long in the middle. Audience members sang along and danced to his songs “Maybe It’s You” and his cover of “Sweater Weather.”
Finally, the headliner, r&b performer Mikey Mike took the stage. Charismatic and backed by a talented band (including a classically trained guitarist from Jullliard), Mikey Mike had everyone on their feet and listening to songs like “Doin’ Me” and “Cut my hair.” His stage presence in between songs also had audience members laughing along with his jokes and drawn in by his unique, laid-back personality. We at LMVC wish him the best of luck with his debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live in the coming weeks.
Great job to all the bands who performed on Friday night, and we look forward to seeing what they put out in the future.
